"Houston’s Stereoccult does, and the band’s first full-length album, “Melodic Transference,” is a post-punk patchwork of hope and despair that marks this ongoing apocalypse well.

The band, playing White Swan March 12, started in 2018 though it didn’t really reach its final form until the first whispers of the pandemic began to be heard in the U.S. The sound is classic early alternative. Singer and primary lyricist Vinn Mörgue channels the baritone despairing wail of Ian Curtis with just a touch of Prof. Alex Read of ThouShaltNot. At times, it’s easy to imagine the record has been dropped in from an alternative dimension where Joy Division never had to become New Order."
